A new program series called Getting A Read On The Body will happen at WCMA, the first installment of which will take place Thursday, Jan 11 at 5:30 PM in WCMA’s Reading Room. Come for some tea and conversation around the recent acquisition of Nude, Harlem by James Van Der Zee. Assistant Curator Horace Ballard will be setting up and leading this informal discussion that will put the work in context.
The program is to bring out three recent acquisitions of photographs in WCMA’s collection for a series of informal, salon-style conversations. All the works are photographic portraits that deal, in various ways, with gender, sexuality, race, and identity, among other themes. We hope to bring together a range of voices and expertise across our community for informal dialogues around these works of art. I hope you might be able to join us! Below is the announcement for the first three programs.
Two more conversations will follow on January 25th and February 8th. Jay Clarke, Manton Curator of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs at the Clark Art Institute, will lead the next conversation.
