Robert Sterling Clark Professor Lecture: “Arts of Agitation”

Mel Y. Chen presents “Arts of Agitation”

This talk considers “agitation” as an interaction between bodily and political being. My attention to agitation has emerged as the last aspect of a study of chemical intimacies, wherein intoxication has operated as a projection in the congealment of race, disability, and time as a diagnostic or effect. I will share aspects of the material temporalities of intoxication with one of my foci, in Queensland, Australia, discussing the work of Badtjala artist Fiona Foley, who has a complex installation in the State Library of Queensland as well as other forms of sculptural work, photography, and visual art that refer to an 1898 Queensland opium law and its legacies.
