The Loosening of Time: Maurice and Charles Prendergast

Curated by Max Boersma MA ’16 and Christopher Borschel MA ’16, The Loosening of Time: Maurice and Charles Prendergast examines the modes of temporality active in the Pendergast brothers’ hybrid approaches to early twentieth-century American art. Highlighting their formative European travels, keen interest in public forms of leisure, rich knowledge of the history of art, and shared penchant for myth and fantasy, the exhibition proposes that time manifests as a mutable phenomenon across their practices through subject matter, materials, and technique. The installation includes paintings, works on paper, decorative objects, and archival material drawn from WCMA’s extensive Prendergast holdings—the largest collection in the world.
